The Episcopal Church has survived the storms that swept the denomination in the past 15 years and is moving forward, Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry said Saturday in Buffalo.
"That's the testimony of an ancient faith, that it's durable. It lasts," Bishop Curry said in an interview at the Diocesan Ministry Center in the Town of Tonawanda. "We'll weather it. We've already weathered it."
Bishop Curry grew up in Buffalo and graduated from Hutchinson Central Technical High School. He returned this weekend to help mark the 200th anniversary of St. Paul's Cathedral, the mother church of the Episcopal Diocese of Western New York.

After countless spaghetti dinners, chicken barbecue fundraisers, and bottles and cans collected and redeemed, the people of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Angola finally have their new sanctuary.Bishop J. Michael Garrison of the Episcopal Diocese of Western New York helped the congregation celebrate Sunday by consecrating the bright new building at 930 Lake St.About 90 people showed up for the special consecration service — a rarity in Western New York, where many churches with dwindling memberships have either closed or are struggling to keep their doors open.“It was a dream that we as parishioners have had for so long,” said Carole J. Kin, warden of the vestry at St. Paul’s.What makes the new sanctuary unusual is that church members refused to take a loan to build it.They scrimped and saved and donated for more than 20 years to get to this point.More here-

The presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church will visit Buffalo at the end of the month and speak at the Episcopal Diocese of Western New York's annual governing convention.Bishop Katherine Jefferts Schori, considered chief pastor of 2.4 million Episcopalians in 16 countries and 110 dioceses, was elected and invested to the post in 2006.She is the 26th presiding bishop.Her visit will coincide with the diocese's 173rd convention, to be held Oct. 29 and 30 in the Millennium Hotel in Cheektowaga.Jefferts Schori will speak at the convention on Oct. 29 and preside and preach at a service in St. Paul's Cathedral, 128 Pearl St., 3:30 p.m. Oct. 30.Admission to the service is by ticket only. A limited number of tickets for this special service remain and are available to the public free of charge. Call the diocesan communication office at 881-0660, Ext. 22, by Wednesday.Prior to being ordained to the Episcopal priesthood in 1994, Jefferts Schori had a career as an oceanographer.In 2000, she was elected bishop of the Diocese of Nevada, the same diocese where the Rev. J.
