Investigators search for cause of fire at Fond du Lac landmark

Although investigators know the origin of Friday's fire at a historic Fond du Lac convent, the Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue said they are still trying to determine what caused it and if foul play was involved.

Division Chief of Fire Prevention Troy Haase said the fire originated in the back of a building on the first floor. According to Haase, bystanders witnessed children skateboarding around the building before the blaze started.

“Somebody was inside the house where they’re not supposed to be. For us to determine whether someone did it accidentally or intentionally, we can’t really go there yet. We have to do interviews and try to figure that out.”

Fire destroys historical building in Fond du Lac

The former Episcopal Convent of the Holy Nativity building in Fond du Lac is a total loss after a fire destroyed the historical building Friday night.

Fire crews were called to the fire, located near East Division and Amory Street, around 7:25 p.m.

Firefighters reported heavy smoke upon arrival.

Fond du Lac Fire Division Chief of Fire Prevention, Troy Haase, says the fire was contained to the former convent and no nearby buildings were damaged.

No one is believed to have been in the building and there are no reported injuries. Fire crews are still putting out hot spots from the outside of the building and have not searched the inside.

Matthew Alan Gunter consecrated eighth bishop of Fond du Lac

Matthew Alan Gunter was ordained and consecrated bishop of the Diocese of Fond du Lac April 26 in a service held at Appleton Alliance Church in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Gunter is the eighth bishop of Fond du Lac, replacing the Rt. Rev. Russell E. Jacobus, who retired after serving as bishop of Fond du Lac for 19 years.

Eight hundred people gathered to participate in a liturgy that recognized Gunter as being “called by God to carry on the apostolic work of leading, supervising, and uniting the church,” according to an April 30 press release.

Gunter elected new bishop

The Rev. Matthew Alan Gunter was elected Eighth Bishop of the Diocese of Fond du Lac at the 139th Annual Convention on Saturday.

Gunter, rector of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Glen Ellyn, Ill., was elected on the second ballot out of three candidates. To be elected, a candidate must have received a majority of the votes in both the lay order and the clergy order. On the second ballot, he received 73 of 99 votes cast in the lay order (50 required) and 43 of 69 votes cast in the clergy order (35 required), according to an event press release.

Fond du Lac bishop candidates announced

The Standing Committee of the Diocese of Fond du Lac has announced July 26 a slate of 3 candidates for election as their next bishop. Your prayers are asked for the candidates, the diocese and for the working of the Holy Spirit through the electing process.

The three candidates are:

The Rev. Matthew Alan Gunter, Rector, St. Barnabas, Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Diocese of Chicago

The Rev. Eric Christopher Mills, Rector, St. Anne’s, De Pere, Wisconsin, Diocese of Fond du Lac

The Very Rev. William Willoughby, III, Rector, St. Paul’s, Savannah, Georgia, Diocese of Georgia

A petition process for submitting the names of additional candidates will continue until August 8th, when all nominations will be closed.

The next bishop will be elected during the 139th Annual Diocesan Convention on October 19th at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Fond du Lac. The ordination and consecration of the next bishop is scheduled for April 24th, 2014 and will take place at the facilities of Appleton Alliance Church.
