Episcopalians name new bishop

From Savannah-

The Rt. Rev. Scott Anson Benhase became the 10th bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia in a formal ceremony Saturday.

The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, presiding bishop of The Episcopal Church, ordained and consecrated Benhase as a bishop in the national church during the service.

At least 800 were expected to attend the ceremony, including clergy and members from the Diocese of Georgia, and 23 bishops from around the country.

Benhase replaces the outgoing Rt. Rev. Henry I. Louttit, who is retiring after serving 15 years as bishop of the diocese.

The Diocese of Georgia is one of 116 dioceses that comprise the 2 million-member Episcopal Church.

The denomination traces its Georgia roots to the founding of the colony and the congregation of Christ Church in 1733.

Three parishes - Christ Church, Savannah; Christ Church, St. Simons Island; and St. Paul's Church in Augusta - formed the Diocese of Georgia in 1823. The Rt. Rev. Stephen Elliott served as the first bishop from 1841 to 1866.
