Work begins on new Episcopal church

From Scranton-

After a long delay, work is under way on the new home of St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

Sections of the modular building were delivered to the site along Route 6 last week, and a crane hoisted them into place on Tuesday.

Local contractor and developer Anthony Talarico is overseeing the project. He estimated that the building will be ready for occupancy in about two months.

The church has been without a permanent home since 2004. The old church, just downhill from the new location, was along Tunkhannock Creek, and was inundated by floods several times.

When the remnants of Hurricane Ivan hit Pennsylvania in 2004, the church's sanctuary and Sunday school wing were destroyed.

The church applied for a Federal Emergency Management Agency buyout.

At the time, church members decided it was too dangerous to remain at the site along the creek. Their fears were confirmed when more significant flooding followed in April 2005 and June 2006.

Since Ivan, the church has been operating out of a storefront in the Tioga West Plaza. The old building was deconsecrated in 2006, and demolished the following January.
