From Virginia-
For many college students, spring break is exactly like it used to be. Students flock to Florida beaches to soak up the sun, or they catch up on TV watching and sleep. But alternative spring breaks have become more popular, with students spending their week off doing hard labor to serve others. While some students make the trips to build skills, experience or a resume, others are motivated at least in part by their religious beliefs.Laura Johnson, a University of Mary Washington junior, has traveled to the New Orleans area five times since Hurricane Katrina hit almost 51/2 years ago.Her latest spring break trip took her again to New Orleans, with the UMW Episcopal ministry--the Canterbury Club--and the Lutheran Campus Ministry. The group of eight students and three adult leaders spent their week tearing off shingles and putting down new wood on a roof that was damaged during Katrina."The first day I thought, 'Roofing is fun,'" Johnson said. "The second day I thought, 'Roofing is not so fun.'"More here-
