'God did a real number on me'

About four years ago, one of the few passersby who dropped into Butterfield's enormous neo-Gothic barn of a church is St Augustine's on a prime piece of real estate in Queen's Gate, South Kensington, would have witnessed an extraordinary sight.

Hour after hour, standing at the altar, they would have seen an ex-offender with startling blue eyes, a shock of wavy brown hair and a face that has clearly 'lived' a little, practising the complex rituals and liturgy of a 34-page High Mass that owes more to 20th-century Rome than his own Church of England, until he knew every step by heart.

Rev Paul Cowley was awarded an MBE in the latest honours, for services to ex-offenders. His story and that of the church he now leads are living witnesses to the power of faith to transform.

Free course will let public ‘explore’ life of Jesus

What if you could go to a meeting where the theme was, “Everything you wanted to know about Jesus but were afraid to ask?”

Well, just such a meeting right here in what is often referred to as the “buckle of the Bilble belt” is scheduled. And now you can ask. No questions are considered out of bounds, said promoters of this project.

Starting Wednesday, Jan. 28, all those interested can examine the teachings of Jesus in the friendly, “ask anything” atmosphere of the ALPHA Course, being held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, located at 609 S. Main St.

The 10-week course begins at 6:30 p.m. with a Welcome Dinner where guests can make new friends as well as find answers to life’s big questions, says course promoters.

This is the first in a series of three scheduled conferences called “Today’s Quest” that honor the late Richard Austin, who shared his knowledge as a family counselor and psychologist during his more than 15 years at St. Francis.
