Religious freedom laws panned by all sides

The Morrison government's proposed religious freedom laws have managed to please few, with religious groups and human rights organisations alike calling for changes.

 

While religious figures say the laws don't go far enough, secular groups say they override the rights of other marginalised parts of society.

 

Submissions on the draft religious freedom bills closed last Wednesday, but the sheer volume received means the Attorney General's Department is yet to publish them.

 

The government hopes to get the legislation to a parliamentary vote by the end of the year.

But with a final form of legislation yet to be settled, only four sitting weeks remaining, and the expectation of Senate committee scrutiny, that looks unlikely.

 

The Catholic and Anglican churches hold similar concerns about the bill, including that its protections don't extend across the full gamut of religious organisations.

Anglican Communion Gives Top Job in Rome to LGBT, Abortion Advocate

A senior Anglican bishop who publicly opposes fundamental Roman Catholic doctrine on abortion and homosexuality has been appointed Chair of Governors of the Anglican Centre in Rome.

Michael Burrows, Anglican bishop of Cashel, Ferns and Ossory, who defied the official position of the Catholic Church during the Irish Referendum on abortion in May and announced he would vote to repeal the Eighth Amendment, will oversee the Anglican Communion's headquarters for dialogue and unity with the Catholic Church from January 1, 2019.

"In an age when we are all supposed to be 'ecumenically sensitive' it seems an appalling insult to Catholics for an Anglican bishop who is an abortion and gay rights activist to be appointed to such an important position as the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Anglican Centre in Rome," said Catholic priest, author and blogger Fr. Dwight Longenecker. "Is Bishop Burrows' appointment an unfortunate blunder or a calculated move on the part of Anglican authorities to push a progressive agenda in the heart of Rome?"

Anglican Catholic Church of Canada Votes Overwhelmingly to Unite with Rome

The Dean's Report on Synod 2010

The Eighth Provincial Synod and Thirteenth Diocesan Synod of the Anglican Catholic Church of Canada were held simultaneously at the Rosemary Heights Retreat Centre in Surrey, B.C., July 12 to 16, 2010. In attendance were the Canadian House of Bishops (Bishop Peter Wilkinson, Metropolitan and Bishop Ordinary; Bishop Craig Botterill, Suffragan for Atlantic Canada and Chancellor; Bishop Carl Reid, Suffragan for Central Canada and Apostolic Commissary; Bishop Robert Mercer, Assistant Bishop; along with the TAC Primate, Archbishop John Hepworth); eighteen members of the House of Clergy; and thirty members of the House of Laity; together with a number of observers and guests. The first evening began with Evensong, dinner, and then a wine and cheese reception hosted by the ACCC Parishes of the Lower Mainland.

The Most Reverend Michael Wright

His postings included the British Army of the Rhine, Nato at Shape, near Mons, and Hong Kong. When in Aden he was regularly flown by helicopter to take Communion services in the Radfan region of Yemen, using ammunition boxes for an altar.

He was serving in Cyprus when the 1974 coup occurred. Returning to his rectory there, he found a convoy of cars, bringing some 1,000 refugees from Nicosia and Famagusta.

For almost a fortnight Wright and his wife slept in their sitting room while feeding the guests allotted to them on unchanging "compo" rations and explaining the gravity of the situation to exasperated, bikini-clad tourists. Afterwards he and his wife were bemused to find that a large sports field nearby had been used as a car park and was now left with one vehicle – a Rolls-Royce.

After returning home to Woolwich, he was woken from his bed to attend the victims of the bombing of the King's Arms there in 1974. But the posting also gave him time to paint a large picture of the barracks and church in acrylic. It was greatly admired when exhibited – one general judged it a mixture of LS Lowry and Canaletto – but Wright refused to sell, though some miniature copies were made. His other works included a large picture, Christ in Glory, at a church in Mönchengladbach, western Germany, which he painted on his study floor over several months before it was mounted on a wooden frame and placed over a window to give the impression of stained glass. Another commission, produced in fibreglass for the new garrison church at Bovington, Dorset, was a sculpture with golden-coloured angels holding the shields of different regiments. This was placed in the sanctuary.
