SNHD teams up with local church to help communities of color combat COVID-19

From Las Vegas-

The COVID-19 pandemic is hitting minority communities particularly hard, but the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) is working to fight against the disparity.

The health district plans to do this by setting up community outreach centers. 8 News Now got an exclusive look inside the Health District’s very first center, located at All Saints Episcopal Church near Washington and Decatur in Las Vegas. 

One of its main goals is to help communities of color combat COVID-19.

The quiet courtyard at All Saints Episcopal Church is transforming into a healthcare haven. SNHD’s Southern Nevada Community Health Center will offer COVID-19 testing and telehealth services at the church, which is meant to serve the surrounding area’s diverse population. 

This is the first time the Health District’s Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) is doing outreach like this.

Diocese of Nevada announces postponement of bishop election

From Nevada-

“Dear People of the Diocese of Nevada,

Our bishop search process this year was challenging in several respects. One is that there were an unprecedented number of bishop searches in process, resulting in a limited applicant pool. Another is that decisions had to be made under time constraints that did not allow the Standing Committee to engage in the depth of deliberation really needed.

Since announcing the slate of candidates, more information has been brought to our attention that calls our decisions into question. We have, after much soul searching, unanimously concluded that it is in the best interest of the Diocese to postpone the election of our 11^th Bishop until next year following another search under more propitious circumstances.

We are grateful to the Search Committee for their faithful work and regret any frustration they may feel that we are not proceeding to an election now. The decision to delay is in no way a reflection on the Search Committee, but rather is what we deem to be for the good of the Diocese. Likewise, we are grateful to the candidates on the 2018 slate. Our decision does not preclude them from applying again and participating in the 2019 search process.

STATEMENT ON THE LAS VEGAS MASSACRE

Our hearts break yet again over another mass shooting. This time it happened here in Nevada at a country music festival. It feels more real to us. From children slaughtered in a Colorado high school and a Connecticut elementary school to young adults at a gay nightclub in Orlando to Black worshippers in a South Carolina church to county music fans in Nevada, violence strikes any and all of us randomly. The perpetrators sometimes clothe their crime in an ideology – sometimes religious, sometimes political, sometimes racial, and sometimes not at all. The common thread is the choice of violence as a response to the satisfactoriness of the world.

If we muster the will, there are steps we could take to curb the gun violence. We do not need to interfere with anyone’s hunting rifles or even their handguns to say that no one has a legitimate need for such an arsenal of automatic weapons as Stephen Paddock unleashed on his victims. In the Las Vegas shooting, bad as it was, it could have been worse. Many were saved by hearing the shots and taking cover. Congress is now considering legislation to make silencers more freely available. Silencers will increase the number of fatalities and injuries. We have before us ways to make things better or worse. The choice will be ours.

Presiding Bishop delivers message from Anglican Communion primates on Las Vegas, Nevada shooting

Presiding Bishop and Primate Michael B. Curry and the primates of the Anglican Communion prayed to honor the victims of the shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada.

More than 50 people were killed and more than 500 were injured in a shooting on the Las Vegas Strip on Sunday evening, marking the worst mass shooting on American soil.

The primates have gathered at Canterbury Cathedral for their Oct. 2-6 meeting.
Statement from the primates

The following is a statement from the primates of the Anglican Communion to Bishop Dan Edwards of the Diocese of Nevada.

We were greatly distressed to learn of the dreadful events in Las Vegas last night. The scale of the loss of life and the numbers of injured is truly shocking. We are sending our deepest condolences to you and to the people of your diocese – in particular, the people of Las Vegas.

Churches of northern Nevada town vandalized on Easter Sunday

From Nevada-

Vandals chose Easter to deface most — if not all — of the six churches in Incline Village, church leaders of the Northern Nevada town said Sunday.

Attendees of Incline Village Foursqure Church arrived for services to see “Jesus is a lie” and upside-down crosses spray-painted on the building’s walls, said John and Ruby Cole, co-pastors of the congregation.

“I believe it was every church,” said a representative of Cornerstone Community Church.

Before being called, police showed up at Foursquare Church about 10:15 a.m., John Cole, 68, said. It was the fourth church the officer had been to, and he said the other three also had been vandalized.

While John Cole was filing a report outside, the church’s worship leader asked the congregation to pray and ask that “God would bless these people and forgive them for what they have done,” Ruby Cole said, adding that they also hoped the vandals would have a “change of heart.”
