Diocese of the Dominican Republic elects Moisés Quezada Mota bishop coadjutor

The Rev. Moisés Quezada Mota has been elected as bishop coadjutor of the Episcopal Diocese of the Dominican Republic, pending the required consents from a majority of bishops with jurisdiction and standing committees of the Episcopal Church.

Quezada, 58, rector of Jesus Nazareno and Good Samaritan mission churches in San Francisco de Macoris, was elected on the second ballot out of a field of four nominees.

He received 23 votes of 35 cast in the lay order and 29 of 48 cast in the clergy order. An election on that ballot required 19 in the lay order and 25 in the clergy order.

The election was held July 25 during the diocese’s extra-ordinary convention at The Cathedral Church of the Epiphany in Santo Domingo.

One candidate added to Dominican Republic bishop coadjutor slate

The Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of the Dominican Republic has announced an additional candidate to stand for election as bishop coadjutor.

The Rev. P. Salvador Patrick Ros Suarez, 59, rector, Church of the Good Shepherd, Rahway, New Jersey, Diocese of New Jersey.

Ros joins three other candidates who were announced in March. They are:

The Rev. Ramon Antonio Garcia De Los Santos, 50, vicar of Misiones San Lucas and La Anunciacion in Santiago, a school principal and archdeacon in the north region of the country;

The Rev. Moises Quezada Mota, 58, vicar of Misiones Jesus Nazareno and Buen Samaritano, in San Francisco de Macoris, and a school principal; and

The Rev. Daniel Samuel, 58, vicar of Misiones Santa Maria Virgen, Divina Gracia and San Cornelio, and a school principal.

Dominican Republic announces 3 nominees for bishop coadjutor

The Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of the Dominican Republic has announced a slate of three candidates to stand for election as the diocese’s bishop coadjutor.

They are:

The Rev. Ramon Antonio Garcia De Los Santos, 50, vicar of Misiones San Lucas and La Anunciacion in Santiago, a school principal and archdeacon in the north region of the country;

The Rev. Moises Quezada Mota, 58, vicar of Misiones Jesus Nazareno and Buen Samaritano, in San Francisco de Macoris, and a school principal; and

The Rev. Daniel Samuel, 58, vicar of Misiones Santa Maria Virgen, Divina Gracia and San Cornelio, and a school principal.

The Standing Committee released the names during the annual Diocesan Convention, held Feb. 13-15 at Iglesia San Esteban in San Pedro de Macoris.

The Diocese of the Dominican Republic will receive nominations by petition for additional candidates through March 19.

Michigan team of Episcopal adults return from a Dominican Republic mission trip

Three Episcopal dioceses from Michigan’s Lower Peninsula are partnering with the Diocese of the Dominican Republic to complete the building of a church and school in San Simon, located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic.

The project is called D.R.E.A.M. (Dominican Republic and Episcopal Churches in all of Lower Michigan). Having established relationships with Bishop Julio Holguin of Santo Domingo and his staff, area teams have been formed combining ideals, talents, finances and dreams to work together over a four-year period to build a new church and school.

As described by Clarence Jordan’s Cotton Patch translation of Hebrews 11:1, “Faith is the turning of dreams into deeds, the betting of your life on unseen realities.”

Working together, the Episcopal missionaries are creating a new reality in San Simon.

Team No. 1, comprised of 11 Episcopalians from different locations within Lower Michigan, met in Detroit on Jan. 15 and flew to Puerto Plata, DR via Miami. Though the majority of the team had never met and some had never traveled outside the country, they quickly formed friendships that allowed the group to bond together. The group was met at the airport by a matching group of Dominicans lead by their pastor, Padre Bienvenido, who is currently assigned to four churches in the area.

Parishioners head to the Dominican Republic

Planning goes into everything, from vacation Bible school to replacing church doors in the Dominican Republic.

Church and school construction and vacation Bible school were the focus of two mission teams sent from All Saints Episcopal Church on Hilton Head Island to the Episcopal Diocese of the Dominican Republic in Barahona.

Sun City resident Fred Finn served as the mission leader for a construction team, which also included Arthur McVitty of Hilton Head and Michael Wolstencroft, also of Sun City. The trio assisted with the installation of doors at La Redención School, part of a new church complex that the members of All Saints and the Clearwater Deanery from Florida are helping to construct in the city of Barahona within the Episcopal Diocese of the Dominican Republic.

Helping build faith on island

With access to a computer, telephone and the nearby interstate, Dr. Bob Stevens is in his 12th year of spearheading a growth initiative within the Episcopal Church.

Operating out of DaySpring Episcopal Conference Center, Stevens directs the Dominican Development Group, a nonprofit corporation focused on building churches and schools in part of Hispaniola.

"We try not to impose our views on them," said Stevens, calling that a type of colonialism. "Their decisions dictate what we do."

Stevens had been involved in planning and development of church efforts in the Caribbean nation and worked as a missionary before assuming his current position in 1998. He now travels up and down Interstate 75 to mission meetings a few times a week to explain what he understands the people there need.

With upwards of 300,000 children and limited or no classroom space, the Dominican Republic's dearth of schools has been addressed by Stevens. He has led annual journeys to build churches to which schools are attached.
