ACoM enthrones 7th Archbishop Dawea

THE Anglican Church of Melanesia (ACOM) enthrones Rt Reverend Leonard Dawea as the 7th Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Melanesia in a ceremony in Honiara on Sunday.

The Enthronement ceremony was officiated by the senior Bishop Rt Reverend Nathan Tome and all the diocesan bishops of ACOM at the Saint Barnabas Provincial Cathedral. 

Delivering his address at the ceremony the Most Reverend Archbishop Leonard Dawea thanked the Senior Bishop, the Rt Rev. Nathan Tome for his leadership over the Church for the last seven months of leadership interregnum. 

“It is indeed overwhelming to see for myself so many of you who have come to witness this occasion of another milestone in the life and mission of ACOM.

“I am so assured to see the great support you represent, so let me say this you all; because of your trust and confidence in me, I will do my very best to be your servant shepherd. 

“I wish to thank so many of you who sent messages of congratulations and best wishes and support of prayers to me and family on the occasion of my election.

Bishop of Temotu, Leonard Dawea, Elected Primate of the Anglican Church of Melanesia

The Anglican Church of Melanesia will have a new Primate later this year when the Bishop of Temotu, Leonard Dawea, is installed at St Barnabas Provincial Cathedral on 15 September.

The Archbishop-elect was chosen as the new Primate during a meeting of the Provincial Electoral Board last week.

Bishop Leonard, whose current diocese is in the Solomon Islands, will take over from Archbishop George Takeli, who retired in May. Before training for the priesthood he spent 12 years as a monk with the Melanesian Brotherhood.

Bishop Leonard, who comes from the Reefs islands in Temotu, and his wife Dorah, who hails from Guadalcanal, have two children.

New Archbishop enthroned

Thousands gathered at the Provincial Cathedral of Saint Barnabas on Sunday morning to witness the installation and enthronement of the new Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Melanesia the Most Reverend George Takeli.

Archbishop Takeli, from Ulawa in Makira Province is the sixth Archbishop of Melanesia and Bishop of the Diocese of Central Melanesia.

Speaking to the congregation after the enthronement service Archbishop Takeli said yesterday’s gathering gave him peace, a swell of encouragement and confidence to take leadership as Archbishop.

“Your attendance at this service also indicated to me of your willingness to working together with me to carry out my vision and plans for mission work of the Anglican Church in the Province of Melanesia as I take charge of this church beginning from today,” he said.

New Archbishop in Melanesia

THE Anglican Church of Melanesia enthroned its new Archbishop Right Reverend David Vunagi at the Saint Barnabas Cathedral in Honiara yesterday.

Senior Bishop Rt Reverend Charles Koete enthroned him in front of more five thousand Anglican Christians.

Among guests attending are Governor General Sir Nathaniel Waena, Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua, members of the diplomatic corps and all representative clergies from the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea.

Speaking after his enthronement Rt Reverend David Vunagi said he feels humble for the trust vested on him, adding he will always seek God’s wisdom for help.

He said as a new leader of the church he will do his best to serve the interest of all church members in partnership with the government.

“I’m willing to work in partnership with the government because the church and the government serve the same people,” he said.

Rev Vunagi said he is glad to join and work together with all head of churches.

Rev Vunagi was elected to the highest Episcopal position within the Anglican Church by the Provincial electoral Board on March 4 at Tetete Ni Kolivuti, headquarters of the Sisters of the Church, east of Honiara.

Rev. Vunagi is new Anglican archbishop

LEADERS of the Anglican Church of Melanesia yesterday elected a new archbishop.

He is the Rt Rev David Vunagi who is currently the Bishop of the Diocese of Temotu. Bishop Vunagi was elected to the highest Episcopal position by the Provincial electoral board.

The election was held at Tetete Ni Kolivuti; headquarters of the Sisters of the Church, east of Honiara.

This election became necessary following the retirement of former archbishop, Sir Ellison Pogo December 9 last year.

Bishop Vunagi, who has served in the Episcopal ministry in the last eight years in the Diocese of Temotu will be enthroned as the fifth Archbishop of Melanesia on 31 May 2009 in Honiara.

Prior to serving in the Church as a Clergy, and then as a bishop, he was a teacher by profession teaching at the government school at KGVI and the Anglican Church of Melanesia school Selwyn College.

Bishop Vunagi from Samasodu in Isabel Province was educated at KG VI Secondary School from 1968 to 1973.

He obtained a Diploma of Education in Science from the University of the South Pacific in Fiji in 1976, and later a Bachelor of Education in Biology from the University of Papua New Guinea in 1982.

In his theological training, the Archbishop-elect obtained Bachelor of Theology from St. John’s College in Auckland, New Zealand in 1990.
