The Shroud of Turin: Latest Study Deepens Mystery

From The National Catholic Register-

A new French-Italian study on the Shroud of Turin throws doubt on what many thought was the definitive dating of the cloth believed by millions to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ.

This latest two-year study was headed and funded by French independent researcher Tristan Casabianca, with a team of Italian researchers and scientists: Emanuela Marinelli, who has written extensively about the shroud; Giuseppe Pernagallo, data analyst and senior tutor at the University of Catania, Italy; and Benedetto Torrisi, associate professor of economic statistics at the University of Catania.

In 1988 radiocarbon tests on the Shroud of Turin dated the cloth to between 1260 and 1390. The implication was clear: The shroud was a medieval forgery. After a 2017 Freedom of Information (FOI) request, a new team of researchers gained access to the original data used for the 1988 test. The findings of this new team are that the 1988 test results were unreliable.

This 3D “carbon copy” of Jesus was created using the Shroud of Turin

From Aleteia-

"We believe that we have the precise image of what Jesus looked like on this earth," said Professor Giulio Fanti of the University of Padua.

“This statue is the three-dimensional representation in actual size of the Man of the Shroud, created following the precise measurements taken from the cloth in which the body of Christ was wrapped after the crucifixion,” explains Giulio Fanti, teacher of mechanical and thermal measurements at the University of Padua, who studies the Shroud. Based on his measurements, the professor has created a “carbon copy” in 3D which, he claims, allows him to affirm that these are the true features of the crucified Christ.

Therefore, we believe that we finally have the precise image of what Jesus looked like on this earth. From now on, He may no longer be depicted without taking this work into account.” The professor granted exclusive coverage of his work to the weekly periodical Chi, to which he revealed: “According to our studies, Jesus was a man of extraordinary beauty. Long-limbed, but very robust, he was nearly 5 ft. 11 in. tall, whereas the average height at the time was around 5 ft. 5 in. And he had a regal and majestic expression.” (Vatican Insider)

Shroud of Turin a source of spiritual strength for academic

From Canada-

Trinity Western University professor Phillip Wiebe has been a convert to the power of The Shroud of Turin since 2000.

That's when the 66-year-old old Anglican academic had an epiphany upon first viewing the shroud in Turin Cathedral in northern Italy. Many Christians consider the shroud the bona fide burial cloth of a crucified Jesus.

Even though Wiebe teaches at an evangelical university where faculty are expected to adhere to traditional Christian doctrine, the member of the Church of the Ascension in Langley City admits being blown away by his first-hand experience of the Turin shroud.

In that ecstatic moment, Wiebe was finally convinced that the resurrection of Jesus Christ was an actual physical event. "I was shocked at the confidence I felt. It made me realize I had doubts about the resurrection."

Since then, Wiebe, a philosophy professor who has written scholarly books on reported religious miracles and visions, such as God and Other Spirits, has been giving scores of presentations about the four-metre-long shroud.

Studying the Shroud as a ‘Strange Icon’

From The Living Church-

An interest that began in incredulous laughter has led an Episcopalian to deep immersion in Shroud of Turin studies.

Daniel Porter, a longtime member of Trinity Church, Wall Street, joins other shroud scholars on The History Channel’s Easter-season documentary, The Real Face of Jesus? The documentary premiered on April 3, repeats on April 10, and is available on DVD.

Porter said he became interested in the shroud while reading Thomas Cahill’s Desire of the Everlasting Hills: The World Before and After Jesus during a flight. Porter was amazed that Cahill gave serious attention to the shroud, and began laughing aloud as he read.

Porter’s curiosity was piqued, though, and he began research on whether the shroud could have covered the body of Jesus Christ after his crucifixion.

Today he tends toward considering the shroud authentic rather than a clever artistic forgery, and he writes on the topic frequently at his Shroud of Turin Story website.

“History is the part that fascinates me,” he told The Living Church. “In fact, I think history gives the best argument for the shroud’s authenticity.”

Evidence of the shroud’s presence at Edessa (present-day Urfa), Turkey, in the 3rd or 5th century argues against its being a medieval contrivance, Porter said.

He calls the shroud a “strange icon.”

“Icons tend to be stylistic,” he said. “They exaggerate features, they try to capture expressions.”

The expression of the figure on the shroud is “subdued, realistic and serene,” he said.

“It’s almost what I would call an intellectual tease. I think it’s real, but I would be the first to say I don’t think we can know that,” Porter said.

“God is not trying to provide answers so much as raise questions,” he said. “You can’t entirely get your arms around it, and if you could it wouldn’t be so interesting. God not only gave us free will; he also gave us a brain.”
