Francis Chan Urges Believers to Reject 'Cop-Out' Christianity, Lose Your Life for the Gospel

From Christian Today-

Francis Chan is calling on Christians to be willing to give up their lives for Jesus and not compromise the Gospel by hiding behind otherwise good causes.

Speaking on the main stage Saturday night on the National Mall before tens of thousands assembled from all 50 states at America's Tent of Meeting sponsored by Awaken the Dawn, Chan encouraged believers to be willing to lay down their lives for Christ and to not shrink back from being bold.

"What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?" Chan asked, citing the Words of Jesus in Mark 8:36.

"I'm promising you, if you try to save your life, you're going to lose it, but you're not going to regret it."

Chan, 50, who leads We Are Church, a network of house churches based in the San Francisco Bay Area, mentioned that he has reached a point in his life where he's getting rid of more and more stuff. And there is no point in trying to have it all, he said, and protect ones life from all possible forms of suffering.

IT’S BASICALLY JUST IMMORAL TO BE RICH

From Current Affairs-

Here is a simple statement of principle that doesn’t get repeated enough: if you possess billions of dollars, in a world where many people struggle because they do not have much money, you are an immoral person. The same is true if you possess hundreds of millions of dollars, or even millions of dollars. Being extremely wealthy is impossible to justify in a world containing deprivation.

Even though there is a lot of public discussion about inequality, there seems to be far less talk about just how patently shameful it is to be rich. After all, there are plenty of people on this earth who die—or who watch their loved ones die—because they cannot afford to pay for medical care. There are elderly people who become homeless because they cannot afford rent. There are children living on streets and in cars, there are mothers who can’t afford diapers for their babies. All of this is beyond dispute. And all of it could be ameliorated if people who had lots of money simply gave those other people their money. It’s therefore deeply shameful to be rich. It’s not a morally defensible thing to be.

Rich are pushing world into crisis, Williams warns

From The Church Times-

THE former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Williams has blamed the lifestyle of the affluent West for the effects of climate change in the world's poorest regions.

Lord Williams, who now chairs Christian Aid, singled out the "uncontrolled burning" of fossil fuels as a significant contributor to global warming.

His comments, in an article for The Sunday Telegraph last weekend, were timed to coincide with the publication on Monday of a report by the Intergovernment Panel on Climate Change (News and Comment, 21 March).

The report says that climate change is already having an impact around the world, on areas from human health to agriculture and wildlife. Rising temperatures will increasingly threaten security, health, and food supplies, exacerbate poverty, and damage species and habitats.

Paranoid UK ‘must learn from Dickens’, says Archbishop of Canterbury

From London-

The Archbishop of Canterbury has launched an attack on the growing inequality and fear gripping a “paranoid Britain”.

Dr Rowan Williams, who steps down as head of the Anglican church in December, said the yawning gap between rich and poor had brought “hopelessness” for those at the bottom and “anxiety” for those higher up the ladder. He said the lack of social cohesion in 21st-century Britain had been heightened by a sense of “corporate paranoia” after terrorist attacks and many people had “put up the shutters”.

In an interview with BBC’s Newsnight programme being broadcast tonight, the country’s most senior religious leader criticised a culture where people are becoming “fist-clenching, anxious, not generous”.

He said: “The gulf between the top and the bottom of the economic ladder has grown and is growing, that’s not something we really tackled.”

He said Britain should take inspiration from the works of Charles Dickens.

The central message of Dickens, he said, was that people must let go of the anxiety that comes from the acquisition of wealth.
