Good Friday footy: Melbourne bishops protest

For you baseball fans out there its really rugby.

Melbourne Catholic Archbishop Denis Hart and Anglican Bishop Philip Huggins, who is Vicar-General of the city's Anglican archdiocese, have rejected any proposal to play AFL games on Good Friday.
Archbishop Hart and Bishop Huggins said that any proposal to play games on Good Friday showed a crass disregard for the spiritual needs of people in our community, the bishops said in a statement.

Archbishop Denis Hart, a keen Hawthorn supporter, said that Good Friday is a public holiday because it is such a sacred day for Christians.

"The Christian churches have provided much to the culture of the great country of Australia. They have provided sacred spaces through architecture, think of the spires of St Patrick's and St Paul's Cathedrals in Melbourne. Amidst the hurly burly of daily life people are reminded that there are other values than those of business and work," Archbishop Hart said.

Archbishop Hart and Bishop Huggins said the recent tragic bushfires and the spectre of tragedy and poverty remind us that we need time to grieve and sacred times to be still.
