King Remembered As Loving Father, Pittsburgh Icon

From KDKA Pittsburgh-

A gathering of family, friends, former teammates and colleagues came to St. Paul Episcopal Church in Mount Lebanon to say goodbye and to celebrate the life of Nelson Joseph "Nellie" King this morning.

King first became a household name in Pittsburgh when he broke into the major leagues with the Pirates in 1954.

Ray Goss, King's former broadcast partner, remembered the lanky pitcher taking the mound at Forbes Field.

"I don't remember a lot of other players back then, but I remember Nellie because he was so distinctive," said Goss. "He only played three years for the Pirates; he ran into some arm trouble."

Hall of Famer Bill Mazeroski also remembered his former teammate.

"He's one of the greatest guys I ever met in baseball. Nellie was just a good man," said Mazeroski. "I had a chance to play with him when I got up here in 1956."
