It's your job to stand up to the bigots, Archbishop

Rowan gets blasted by a commentary in the Evening Standard. This is a good example of what the social justice argument looks like when there is no scriptural influence in one's thinking. Its a pretty worn argument but prevalent. The author's name is Will Self, suppose that's his real name or just a rich coincidence ?

"Why does Rowan Williams bow down before those belligerent African Anglican bishops and their conservative supporters who view homosexuality as "unnatural" and a "sin"? By doing so he is not only betraying the spiritual welfare of gay Anglican communicants but also undermining any claims his church has to be established."

It is all our job to stand up to bigotry and harmful behavior toward all people. Mistreating someone who is different is simply unacceptable. Often I see this mistreatment toward my special needs students (both in school and on community based instruction where the children learn to shop in a mall or learn to use public transportation). The excuse that homosexuality is a sin and therefore we don't need to be caring and compassion is also unacceptable. What if we criminalized all sin, gluttony, gossip, being hurtful to others ect...? We'd all be in jail. (for the record I don't see homosexuality as sinful, I've taught to long and have seen too many young people go through a terrible time, especially the middle school years to think anyone would choose to be gay. There are a lot of mean people out there who aren't above hurting others, especially during their formative years. Ask any teacher if they've had a gay student and how others treat these students? I'd be surprised if you get a different assesment).

As for the ABC, I feel that he is trying to keep everyone at the table and at least talking, if not directly, at least through other people. Maybe he feels his best chance to affect change is through this constant dialogue. Let's face it you're not going to change minds if you're not even talking!
