Pierre man elected bishop of Episcopal Diocese
The Episcopal Diocese of South Dakota has elected a Pierre man to be its 10th bishop.
The Rev. John Tarrant is rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Pierre and was elected Saturday on the second ballot at a special convention in the capital city.
Nearly 200 delegates from the state's 80 churches took part.
Tarrant grew up in Michigan and served parishes in Massachusetts and Connecticut before moving to Pierre in 2005.
The bishop-elect must be ratified in July at the general convention of the Episcopal Church. He'll be consecrated as bishop Oct. 31 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center.
