A Ugandan AIDS activist has won an international prize for his role in fighting for the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS.
Gideon Byamugisha, an Anglican priest received the 26th Niwano Peace Prize on Thursday in recognition of his work to uphold the dignity and human rights of people living with AIDS.
In 1992, Rev. Byamugisha became the first African religious leader to publicly announce he was HIV positive. He has since been engaged in HIV/AIDS prevention and care activities in the country.
Makoto Uematsu, primate of Nippon Sei Ko Kai, received the prize on behalf of the Anglican priest.
This was done following an advice not travel because of bird flu. Also advised not to travel was with Norway's Gunnar Stalsett, chairman of the Niwano Peace Prize Committee.
