Silver relic taken during second such theft at Auburn Episcopal church

From Auburn, NY-

For the second time in five months, burglars stole a sacred item made of sterling silver from the Saint Peter and John Episcopal Church in Auburn, police said.

Church officials arrived Sunday morning to find someone had stolen a 100-year-old ciborium from a tabernacle cabinet, police said. The container is used to carry sacred sacraments during Communion.

The ciborium is valued at several thousand dollars, police said. The burglar came sometime between Thursday and Sunday, likely through an unlocked door. There was no evidence of forced entry.

In November, burglars stole five church relics, including a 10-inch chalice, a serving bowl and a serving plate, in a similar theft, police said.
