Archbishop of Canterbury to visit Sabah

Preparations are underway for the visit of the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury (2013-Present), His Grace The Most Reverend and Right Honourable Justin Portal Welby from October 3 to 6. 

The Most Reverend Justin is the head of the established Church of England and the worldwide Anglican Communion, representing 85 million Anglicans worldwide.

He will arrive here from Penang after attending the bi-centennial celebration of The Church of St George, Penang, the oldest Anglican Church in Southeast Asia.

A committee has been formed to oversee the Archbishop’s itinerary in Sabah, chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Christina Liew.

The Most Reverend Justin, who also represents the Queen of England in his visits, will be accompanied by the British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Charles Hay.

Anglican Church ready to celebrate 170 years in Borneo

The Anglican Church will kick off a year-long calendar of events to commemorate its 170th anniversary in Borneo this weekend.

Themed ‘Reaching Forward’, the events celebrate the arrival of Rev Dr Francis Thomas McDougall in Sarawak on June 29, 1848, to lead the Borneo Church Mission Institution.

“But this is not just about Francis McDougall. It is also about his wife Harriette and the countless other missionaries who came over the years and gave their lives for the cause of the Gospel. 

“Yet again, it isn’t just about the Gospel as the Anglican Church in Borneo has impacted every sphere of our lives. Throughout its history, the church here has been instrumental in the fields of education and healthcare.

Anglican Archbishop: ‘Allah’ ruling has far-reaching effects

The ramifications of the Federal Court’s dismissal of the Catholic Church’s application for leave to appeal on the prohibition of ‘Allah’ to refer to God in its weekly publication Herald will likely spill beyond the case.

Reacting to this decision, the Most Reverend Datuk Bolly Lapok — the Archbishop of the Anglican Province of South East Asia and Bishop of Sarawak and Brunei — said the ruling would affect more than the Catholic newspaper.

“Case resolved? I am not too sure. I hope in the process we have not mired ourselves in greater complication,” he said in a statement yesterday.
