The Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest in Austin has received a $2.5 million gift to fully endow its Center for Christian Ministry and Vocation.
The seminary learned of the gift from the Richmond-based Henderson-Wessendorff Foundation in late March, but disclosed details more recently.
The center offers degrees in chaplaincy, spiritual formation and counseling. It will be renamed the Loise Henderson Wessendorff Center for Christian Ministry and Vocation at a ceremony in September, said Tara Elgin Holley, vice president for institutional advancement at the seminary.
The Henderson-Wessendorff charitable foundation includes the estate of Loise Henderson Wessendorff, who died in 2008. Created in 1972, the foundation is the successor to the Robert W. Henderson Foundation established by her father, Houston businessman Robert Wilson Henderson, in 1956, according to the foundation’s website.
The director of the Center for Christian Ministry and Vocation at Seminary of the Southwest, Dave Scheider, said Henderson Wessendorff’s passions included psychology and spirituality.

Douglas Travis, the dean and president of the Seminary of the Southwest, will retire May 31, and Cynthia Briggs Kittredge, the seminary’s academic dean, will succeed him, officials at the Episcopal institution in Austin announced Monday.
Kittredge, 55, will become the seminary’s eighth dean and president. She has been a faculty member since 1999 and academic dean since 2010. Her appointment was announced by the Rt. Rev. Dena Harrison, chair of the seminary’s board and bishop suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas.
Travis, 59, who has headed the seminary since 2007, expressed satisfaction at presiding during a time of robust growth in enrollment and financial support. The seminary raised $12.6 million through its capital campaign, most of which goes to endow faculty chairs, Travis said.
The bottom line is I accomplished what I came here to do, and I’m ready to move on to other things,” Travis said, adding that he planned to pursue a variety of interests.
The Seminary of the Southwest celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2012. Enrollment grew from 81 students in 2008 to 135 in 2011, the largest in the history of the institution, according to Nancy Springer-Baldwin, the seminary’s vice president for communications.

Dioceses, churches and organizations united on Feb. 2 at the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas to cook some meat and raise money for Episcopal Relief & Development.
Thirteen teams came together and started preparing their meat and secret ingredients the night before. A special Compline service was also held in All Saints’ chapel as teams arrived with large grills, special light towers and camping chairs.
Teams from the diocese of Alabama, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Western Michigan, West Texas and Texas took part. Teams from local Episcopal congregations and nearby neighborhood restaurants, coffee houses and bars also competed for barbecue bragging rights.
The event brought hundreds of individuals to the seminary grounds to taste each team’s barbecue and give to a worthwhile cause.
