The other voices of the Yankees, the voices on radio and then television with whom we all grew up, they came and went. Always though, in all the important ways, there was Bob Sheppard, above it all at Yankee Stadium."The modern PA announcers like to shout," he said outside his booth one night at the old Stadium, "to do everything and anything to draw attention to themselves. That has never been my style."But that is why Sheppard became the height of style. That is why he did draw so much attention to himself over nearly 60 years as the voice of the Yankees over the public-address system, what Reggie Jackson first called "the voice of God."Bob Sheppard's voice carried."The voice wasn't just real," Reggie said to me Sunday afternoon.
