Man steals antique copper from church to make recycling money
From Florida-
A 42-year-old got $1,200 — but then a bed at the Polk County Jail after he was caught stealing antique copper rain gutters from a church.
The gutters and other fixtures, valued at $800 each, started disappearing from St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Feb. 25, according to Winter Haven police.
Officers said Wednesday they caught Ira Gregory Walling of Winter Haven as he was dismantling antique copper pieces to take to American Allied Scrap Metal in Haines City.
In previous thefts, eight rain gutters and an enclosure that housed a water spigot, valued at $17,600, were stolen.
Walling was charged with six counts of grand theft, one count of burglary, seven counts of dealing in stolen property and seven counts of false verification to metal recyclers.
