Uganda- Bishops speak out

THE bishops of the three main Christian churches have asked the Government to create an independent body to review the emoluments paid to public officials and MPs.

In a statement at the end of a two-day meeting on Friday, the clerics said the independent body was one way of fostering good governance and proper resource utilisation.

They appealed to the Government and the public to “join hands in the observation of human rights and the fight against corruption.”

The meeting was attended by the Archbishops of the Anglican, Catholic and Orthodox churches as well as other clergy and laity from across the country.

The clerics, under the Uganda Joint Christian Council, urged their secretariat to ensure that civic and voter education started early, ahead of the general elections in 2011.

The clerics appealed to the Government to ensure that, “candidates implicated in election malpractices are disqualified from vying for any political positions for five years,”

On homosexuality, they agreed that people should form family-based groups to expose the dangers of the “evil act.”

They also recommended that religious clubs be formed in schools to campaign against homosexuality, adding that religious education should be made compulsory in schools.
